Smoker to Non-Smoker: How to Help Your Friends


Many of us have been there. Trying to help smokers put down the cigarettes and switch to e-cigs can be a difficult task. But perhaps we have been approaching the issue from the wrong angle.

It’s psychology 101 – if somebody gets in your face aggressively and demands something of you, often times you’ll respond with an equal amount of resistance. The longer you resist the more you believe in your reasoning for resisting.

All smokers see is massive negativity. Gory images, guilt-ridden stories and anything that will scare a smoker into a non-smoker. But is this really the right way to go about helping somebody avoid cigarettes?

It’s much easier to lure somebody toward something with positivity and encouragement than scare them away from something with fear and guilt.

Try being truly positive and encouraging when asking somebody to switch to vaping – it may help speed up the transition.

For a little inspiration, Communication Research Reports published a study ([1] Hussain, S. A., & Lapinski, M. K. (2017)) that used messages and phrases that evoked a sense of nostalgia and happy memories.
